The role of the expert witness
The expert witness has an overriding duty to the court. This duty takes precedence over any obligation to the instructing party. The expert’s role is to provide objective opinion within their area of expertise, to identify any limitations in their opinion, and to assist the court in understanding technical evidence.

Areas of expertise
Dr McQuillan provides expert opinion within the boundaries of his clinical expertise, primarily:

Independence and credibility
Independence is the foundation of expert evidence. Dr McQuillan accepts instruction from both claimant and defendant solicitors and from insurers. Reports are written to the same standard regardless of who instructs. Where the evidence does not support the instructing party’s position, this is stated clearly and constructively.
Fees and instruction
Expert witness work is charged at €600 per hour plus VAT. Court attendance fees are agreed separately. Instruction is by letter setting out the case, the questions to be addressed, and all relevant records.

Yes. Instructions are accepted from claimant and defendant solicitors and from insurers. The same standard of independence applies regardless.
Expert opinion is limited to areas of genuine clinical expertise. Where a case falls outside Dr McQuillan's expertise, this is identified at the outset and an appropriate alternative expert is suggested.
Where possible, at least 4 to 6 weeks notice. Shorter notice can sometimes be accommodated.
